Flexible modular design

Each GMA 200-MW module can control up to 16 individual gas transmitters (sensors). The self-contained, IP-65 wall-mounted housing facilitates cost-effective and space-saving installation. GMA 200-MW systems are scalable, and easy to expand by adding additional controller and relay modules. Optional gateway modules allow control via remote or touch-screen computer interface.

Easy to configure

Easy-to-use, menu driven GMA 200-MW software allows configuration of sensor type, gas type, measuring point designations, units of measurement, calibration curves, and function of the comprehensive and fully programmable relays. Up to three individual or specified alarm thresholds can be programmed for each measuring point. The GMA 200-MW continuously evaluates the analog input signals of the connected detectors.

Integrated relays

GMA 200-MW systems include comprehensive and fully programmable relays. Each controller is equipped with 8 internal relays. Menu-driven software allows easy assignment of measuring points to relays, single or multiple alarms per point, alarm thresholds, configuration of collective or group alarms, zoning, fault messages and voting functions.

Relay modules

GMA 200-RW relay modules are housed in easy to install IP-65 wall mounted enclosures. Each relay module provides an additional 16 freely configurable relays. A total of four additional relay modules (for 64 additional relays) can be managed by the same GMA 200-MW system. Digital connection with the GMA 200-MW controller allows remote positioning of the relay module wherever it makes the most sense, substantially reducing cabling and installation costs.

Remote terminal displays

Relay modules are available with or without an integral display for readings and system information, making it easy to add a remote terminal wherever needed.

Optional Fieldbus-Gateways

Optional gateway modules allow integration of the GMA 200-MW system into existing company networks based on TCP/IP, Process Field Bus or Process Field Network protocols. Monitoring and system performance data are easily exported for viewing or analysis. A wifi interface can be added to the gateway to allow wireless connection with a touch screen Windows® computer or smart-phone to display or access system information.

GMA 200 power options

GMA 200-MW power options include traditional voltage inputs (2 x 24 V DC, 20-30 V), as well as operation via a redundant, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), ensuring continued operation of the gas warning system even during a power outage.

LED indicator lights

The status of the GMA 200-MW system (including operation, fault, service, alarm and relay status) is shown via LEDs. Individual LED indicators identify the type and severity of the alarm condition, (FLT, AL1, AL2, AL3), and any relays activated by the condition, (R1 through R8).

Datalogging standard

Measured values, mean values, alarm events and faults are permanently stored on a microSD memory card.

Graphical display

Currently measured values are displayed on a backlit, graphical LCD. In the event of an alarm the display changes color from green to red, and highlights the affected channels.

Five buttons enable operation at the GMA 200-MW controller. The main functions of the keyboard are the acknowledgement of alarms and the menu-driven operation. Information on the status of the controller, detector and the relays can be retrieved in the operating menu.

Operation via keypad

Operation of the GMA 200-MW is through easy-to-use menus, and a simple 5 button interface for alarm acknowledgement, and viewing information on the status of the gas warning system, detectors and relays. The intuitive push-button controls make it easy to navigate through additional screens of information. The integrated display enables the reading of alarm levels through the controller LCD for easy hazard assessment.

Configuration

A built-in USB port in the GMA 200-MW is used for connection to the configuration software. GMA 200-MW systems connected through a Fieldbus gateway can be remotely connected with a GfG factory service center for configuration, diagnostic or service evaluation.

CO2 a toxic hazard

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is often used as a work medium, or is stored, shipped, or generated as a by-product of certain industrial applications. The specific characteristics of CO2 make this gas a hidden danger.

Carbon dioxide is odorless, tasteless, and undetectable to human senses. CO2 is considerably heavier than air and can rapidly build to dangerous concentra-tions in holes, sewers, or cellars. Concentrations as low as 4 percent volume can be toxic, and 8 percent volume CO2 can cause death. Carbon dioxide also displaces the oxygen content in the ambient air, which may lead to asphyxiation.

GfG Instrumentation's fixed gas warning systems allow continuous monitoring of gas hazards to ensure that countermeasures can be taken in time. A fixed gas monitoring system consists of a remote sensor which is connected by a cable to a controller such as the GMA 011, GMA 100, or GMA 300. The controller powers the remote sensor and evaluates its measurement signals.

IR24 for CO2

The remote sensor with its sensor cell is mainly responsible for the reliability of a gas monitoring system. The sensor is installed wherever CO2 may be present. Even the lowest gas concentrations can be detected and transmitted to a central control station as current or voltage signals which are proportional to the actual gas concentration.

IR24 detection principle: infrared light

Since carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbs light in the infrared spectral range, the NDIR method used in the GfG sensor can measure the carbon dioxide concentration precisely and reliably. Infrared light is sent through the sensor chamber. Carbon dioxide absorbs a part of this light in a narrow spectral range, and the remaining light is measured at the detector. The difference between the light sent and received is propor-tional to the gas concentration. Water vapor or other gases that can be present in the sensor chamber do not affect the light absorption in this spectrum band.

Durable construction for long lifetime

The IR24 does not contain any moving parts that are subject to wear and tear, ensuring a long lifetime, and low maintenance costs. More safety is provided by the permanent self-check and function test of the GMA controller. Sensor and electronics are protected in a solid enclosure from dust and water according to IP 54. This ensures that water cannot enter the detector, even in wet environments.

Easy handling

Behind a service lid on the front of the IR 24 are potentiometers and test connectors for easy adjustment of zero point and detection range. This allows one-person calibration on-site and reduces service down-time.

Quality control adds more safety

All remote sensors are made by GfG Instrumentation and have to pass a 100% quality and function test. All sensors are shipped pre-calibrated. An authorized GfG Instrumentation specialist makes the final adjustments during system installation.

Measuring Principle

IR transmitters have become recognized as reliable gas warning systems for explosion protection. They are used to detect individual combustible gases or a wide range of gases. This involves sending an IR beam with a certain light intensity through a measuring space and then capturing it with a detector. Parts of this beam are absorbed by, amongst other things, hydrocarbon molecules. The reduced light intensity of the beam is registered by beam detectors and converted into a signal as the existing % LEL gas concentration.

Benefits

A special feature of our IR technology is its ability to also measure combustible gases above the lower explosion limit. Moreover, the measurement does not require oxygen.

With this technology there is basically no risk of contaminating the sensor, through silicone vapors or hydrogen sulfide, when using catalytic combustion sensors.

Operation

IR transmitters are usually used with 2 wavelengths, a so-called reference wavelength and just one measuring wavelength. Strict limits are applied to these systems. The absorption spectra of many hydrocarbons are located in the wavelength range of 3.3 μm and overlap to a large extent.

This means that gases with overlapping spectra and just one measuring wavelength can no longer be clearly distinguished. Some hydrocarbons, e.g. the frequently used welding gas acetylene, are non-absorbing in the wavelength range of 3.3 µm, but absorb instead in neighboring wavelength ranges.

In many practical applications, it is not essentially important which gas is responsible for the explosion risk. Therefore, early warnings through the broadband measurement of hydrocarbons in order to monitor the lower explosion limit (LEL) must be guaranteed. False alarms with uncritical concentrations of individual gases or solvents are thus absolutely unacceptable.

These requirements are problems for systems with 2 wavelengths.

Patented GfG Technology

The internationally patented technology of the IR 29 has been developed to solve these problems. The gold-plated mirror optics of the sensor contains 2 radiators and up to 4 detector elements with different optical filters. The precisely calculated, microstructured and pure gold coated mirror optics of the IR 29 are supplied for the first time without beam splitters.

This helps to cut signal losses by 50 % and to completely avoid the physically-related disadvantages of a beam splitter. The measured values from two additional wavelengths (4 wavelengths in total) ensure improved detection of individual gases and thus enhanced selectivity. This results in the prevention of false alarms. Only a 4 wavelength system always guarantees early warnings and the simultaneous prevention of false alarms.

The IR 29 is the first and only intrinsically safe IR gas transmitter with patented 4-beam 4-wavelength technology.

The ignition protection class "intrinsically safe", which is so essential for industrial plants and the mining industry, is achieved by the additional use of the SB1 safety barrier and its internationally patented and innovative design.

Complete Safety Even In Zone 0

The IR 29 is the first IR gas transmitter that can also be used in Ex zone 0 and which enables maintenance as well as replacement of the sensor head without additional expense when energized.

Internal Data Logger

A standard built-in data logger records all the measuring data, minimum / maximum values, average values and alarm events of the last 24 hours in a ring buffer.

The recording can also be shown on the display as a 2 and 8 hour trend indicator.

The histogram mode can be selected as a permanent display of the measured values. These values are continuously updated.

Graphical Display

Measured values are shown on the high-contrast graphical display. The display can be rotated 180° depending on the installation of the IR 29.

Self Diagnosis

Processor-based signal processing enables the systematic compensation of temperature dependencies, aging influences and soiling effects. Safety-relevant functions are monitored permanently via self-diagnosis procedures and a possibly required service is indicated automatically. Daily interfering factors, such as dust and dirt accumulation, are almost completely eliminated by the innovative design.

Pressure Sensor, Moisture and Temperature Compensation

The measuring accuracy of IR sensors depends on partial pressure and thus also air pressure. Climatic fluctuations or barometric high pressure therefore influence the measuring result. Furthermore, the absorption spectrum of water almost completely covers that of hydrocarbon absorption in the 2.7 to 3.3 μm range. Air humidity therefore initially generates a measuring signal the same as the actual measuring gas. This cross-sensitivity is of particular importance in warm areas with high relative humidity. An increase in the absolute water absorption capacity of air is not linear with the temperature, i.e. three times as much water can be absorbed at 40 °C than at 20 °C. This influence can only be compensated if the current moisture content of the air is known. The IR 29 can be optionally equipped with a pressure and moisture sensor for compensation.

Maximum Safety

The innovative display enables the realization of completely safe warning concepts.

Local displays and signals directly at the device can be used to provide an early warning of potential risks.

The display at the upstream safety barrier SB1 D enables the detection of risks outside the danger zone being monitored.

This allows immediate on-site action before really hazardous situations occur.

Dust Protection

A gas permeable, water-repellent diaphragm protects the absorption space of the transmitter against dust. The additional impact protection made from robust V4A stainless steel prevents mechanical damage to the optical components.

The diaphragm can be cleaned or replaced in a matter of minutes.

Remote Controls

The IR 29 transmitter does not feature control elements for setting or servicing tasks. This helps to prevent accidental or unauthorized manipulation.

Service work at the IR 29 transmitter is carried out using the RC 2 remote control.

Alarm points

Each alarm can be adjusted separately. False alarms are eliminated with the adjustable alarm delay. The alarm point values can be freely adjusted within the detection range of the transmitter. Every alarm point value can be selected to be latching / non-latching or resettable / non resettable.

Alarm relays

The controller provides four voltage-free relays for the three alarms in addition to one fault warning. The relays may be used to control additional alarm devices like lights or horns. They can even prompt specific counter measures to prevent or limit dangers from gases or vapors.

Additional features
