Chemical contamination of drinking water and wastewater

Microtox® FX is the portable version of the industry-leading Microtox® Model 500 (M500) laboratory analyser. The Microtox® FX test is fast, simple to conduct, uses small sample sizes and is very cost effective. Results correlate well with those from other toxicity bioassays such as fish, daphnia and shrimp. Microtox® FX is used extensively in the measurement of toxicity of "fit for use" water and wastewater treatment effluent. It is also used as an early screening tool for relative toxicity as part of a test battery.

Microtox® FX test systems are uniquely suited for drinking water surveillance where supplies are monitored regularly and at strategic points. Process explained

The Microtox® FX system performs a dual function; toxicity testing and determination of microbial contamination. The Microtox® FX test system uses a strain of naturally occurring luminescent bacteria called Aliivibrio fischeri to provide acute toxicity detection. The bacteria emit light as a natural part of their metabolism. Exposure to a toxic substance causes disruption of the respiratory process of the bacteria resulting in reduced light output. The Microtox® FX photometer measures the light levels before and after addition of the sample, and the reduction in light output is a measure of the toxicity of the sample.

All organisms contain ATP as their main energy source and the amount of ATP in a sample is directly proportional to the biomass of the sample.

ATP reacts with luciferin/luciferase, the enzyme system present in firefly tails, to produce light. In the reaction, each molecule of ATP produces one photon of light; the light output of this reaction can be accurately measured using the very sensitive Microtox® FX instrument.

The portable fluorometer provides a cost-effective solution to monitor the effects of organic pollution, identify potentially harmful cyanobacteria and turbidity. AlgaeChek Ultra can be configured to detect up to three parameters.

Chlorophyll-a provides an indication of the algal biomass and is often used as an indicator water quality and nutrient pollutants. Phycoerythrin and phycocyanin are pigments found in marine and freshwater cyanobacteria. Many species of cyanobacteria produce toxins that can be harmful to human health or have significant environmental impact.

AlgaeChek Ultra operates in a different fashion to a single wavelength fluorometer, providing information about the proportion of different light harvesting pigments in the algal sample being analysed. AlgaeChek Ultra uses the principle that energy absorbed by the light-harvesting pigments is rapidly transferred to Chlorophyll-a, where it is used to initiate a cycle of photosynthesis. A proportion of the energy absorbed, however, is re-emitted as Chlorophyll a fluorescence with a peak at 682nm. All versions of AlgaeChek Ultra come with a Chlorophyll-a channel as standard, two other channels can then be selected between turbidity and phycoerythrin and phycocyanin-pigments that are prevalent in many cyanobacteria based algae.

Process explained

Fluorescence is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light. In most cases, the emitted light has a longer wavelength, and therefore lower energy, than the absorbed light. Fluorometry is the measurement of this fluorescence. Different molecules absorb and emit light at specific wavelengths. In order to effectively use fluorometry as a tool for environmental analysis the specific wavelengths of the absorbed and emitted light for the target molecules/compounds needs to be known. Modern Water fluorometers use LED light source to excite the molecules and then measure the emittance at the desired wavelength. The intensity of the emitted light provides the concentration of the target compound.

Atrazine is one of the most widely used herbicides in the United States and Australia. Since 2001 it is the most commonly detected pesticide in drinking water supplies in the United States.

Why test for atrazine?

Many research studies have associated long term exposure to atrazine with being toxic to wildlife, impairing the human immune system and causing birth defects. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has acknowledged the harmful effects and has limited its use to only be applied by a pesticide professional, with the exception for lawn care, turf and conifer trees.

In 2013, 73.7 million pounds of the chemical compound was applied in the United States and was used on more than half of all corn crops and up to 90% of sugar cane. High levels of contamination in water have been found especially in the Midwest and Southern United States making the requirement for a quick test kit to measure the amount of atrazine in water essential.

The testo 160 Museum and Archives Monitoring System monitors ambient conditions in display cases, exhibition rooms, and storage rooms. The loggers transfer measurement values by wireless LAN to the Testo Cloud. You can access all data at any time with the testo Saveris 2 App or by PC/tablet/smartphone and a normal browser. If limit values are exceeded, an alarm is immediately provided by text message and/or email. For light intensity, an alarm can also be triggered if the accumulated light quantity within a day, a week or a month exceeds a limit value.

Testo 160 loggers can be easily hidden within the exhibit area thanks to paintable deco-covers. The temperature and humidity probe with wall bushing is ideal for monitoring small display cabinets in which a data logger cannot be placed.

The testo 160 enables you to check all relevant ambient conditions, in order to safeguard the value of the exhibits and fulfill the obligation of documentation.

With the testo 440 delta P flow ComboKit 1 with Bluetooth®, all IAQ-related parameters at air vents, in ducts and at filters can be measured and documented wirelessly. The air velocity & IAQ measuring instrument recognizes probes automatically, and its structured measurement menus simplify the adjustment of air conditioning and ventilation systems. In addition to a Bluetooth® probe, a wired probe and a thermocouple Type K temperature probe can also be connected to the measuring instrument.
