Toxic Twin Algorithm Helps Increase Firefighter Safety During Overhaul

Draeger's patented toxic twins alarm function enables the area monitoring kit (or just the X-am 8000 when used in standalone mode as a personal monitor) to measure CO and HCN against a combined threshold, which increases firefighter safety during overhaul. A combined threshold is used because measuring the combination of CO and HCN individually does not reflect the synergistic but harmful effect that the two chemicals produce when both are present. The instrument will show an A1 or A2 alarm for the HCN+ channel when the combined levels of CO and HCN exceed safe levels. This capability is present when both CO and HCN sensors are selected at purchase.

Advanced sensor technology

The state of the art sensors are long lasting with a lifespan typically over two years. Sensor construction is rated Class I, Division 1 groups B, C, and D for flammables, CO, H2S, O2, and CO2. The sensors are rated Class I, Division 2 for all other toxic gases. Depending on the gas, the sensors will operate through a catalytic, galvanic cell, electrochemical, or infrared design. The plug in nature of the sensors allows for a quick and tool free onsite replacement.

Specifications

Each transmitter features 2 to 3 years of life with normal service. The explosion proof LEL H2 specific transmitter has 3 to 5 years with normal service, and the explosion proof carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrocarbons feature over 5 years of life with normal service. The GX-2001 is the smallest 4-gas monitor in the world and now it is available with a compact battery operated sample-drawing pump that attaches in line for remote, portable monitoring. Together the model RP-6 sample drawing pump and the GX-2001 make a complete solution for confined space entry situations.

The RP-6 pump is housed in a rugged plastic case with quick connect fittings located on both ends of the unit. It is sold with either a 4 rubber nipple or with a 10' hose and probe. When buying the RP-6 with the 10' hose and probe, the probe is equipped with a dust filter and the 10' hose connects at the RP-6's quick connect inlet fitting. The inlet fitting of the RP-6 then connects to a removable clear plastic cup, which is a filter holder. This filter holder contains a dust and hydrophobic filter inside. The exhaust fitting of the RP-6, which is also a quick connect, connects to a coiled hose, which brings the sample to the GX-2001. The RP-6 will run for 5 hours from just 1 AA alkaline battery.

A rotating, ON/OFF switch is located near the inlet end of the RP-6. When the ON/OFF switch is on, the green power LED is illuminated. If a low flow condition occurs, the RP-6 will go into low flow alarm with a red flashing LED. For additional versatility, the RP-6 is also available for use with our model GX-94 portable gas monitor.

The explosion proof sensors use a variety of detection mechanisms including catalytic for LEL and LEL- H2 specific; metal oxide semiconductor for hydrogen; galvanic cell technology for oxygen; electrochemical for hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide; and infrared for carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrocarbons. A hydrogen specific sensor transmitter is not available. Each of these detection methods come with their own measuring range specifications and response times varying from 20 seconds to 45 seconds. These sensors are stainless steel and are housed in a cast aluminum explosion proof J-Box (a stainless steel J-Box is also available).

Non-explosion proof S2 Sensor/Transmitter

Onboard LEDs illuminate when the sensor is in an alarm state while the unit's audible alarm alerts personnel in the area that levels have exceeded the desired limit.
