EdgeHD Optical Design

EdgeHD is an aplanatic, flat field Schmidt optical system that produces aberration-free images across a wide visual and photographic field of view. This means you can use your Advanced VX mount not only with the 9.25" EdgeHD, but virtually any optical tube within Advanced VX's weight limit. The mount is compatible with Vixen format dovetails 100mm or longer, but not compatible with Losmandy D format plates (regardless of plate manufacturer).

The Advanced VX 9.25" EdgeHD comes complete with a 23mm 2" eyepiece, a 1.25" star diagonal, and a 6x30 finderscope. To increase your field of view without sacrificing performance, add the optional EdgeHD reducer lens, bringing your focal ratio down to f/7. An optional Barlow lens can provide additional magnification for high-resolution planetary, lunar, and solar imaging. And, of course, all EdgeHD optical tubes are Fastar-compatible for ultra-fast f/2 wide field imaging. Each EdgeHD tube is fitted with a removable secondary mirror and is opto-mechanically aligned on a laser bench to ensure it is axially symmetric in any configuration.

Maksutov-Cassegrain Optical Design

The Mak is a catadioptric telescope, which means the optical design includes both a lens and a mirror. The light coming through a Mak passes through the corrector lens to the primary mirror and back to a spherical secondary mirror before it hits the eyepiece. Images are bright, sharp, and virtually free of chromatic aberration.

The Maksutov-Cassegrain's optical design offers several unique benefits. Instead of a secondary mirror, the Mak features a "secondary spot" of reflective coating applied directly to the inside of the corrector plate. Because of this, the telescope does not require frequent collimation like a Schmidt-Cassegrain. Also, the secondary spot is significantly smaller than a traditional Schmidt-Cassegrain secondary mirror, giving the Mak its signature high-contrast views.

One important thing to note about Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes is that the larger, heavier Maksutov corrector plate takes longer to cool down and adjust to ambient air temperature compared to a Schmidt-Cassegrain of the same aperture.

ED Objective Lenses

Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass virtually eliminates chromatic aberration, also known as color fringing, a visual defect common in binoculars. Nature DX ED delivers razor sharp images, even at the edges of the field of view. ED glass is also known for producing images with outstanding, true-to-life color.

Not all ED glass is created equal. Celestron's high quality ED glass delivers visibly brighter, sharper images compared to non-ED binoculars. The difference is especially apparent in low light conditions, such as at dawn or dusk.

Coatings and Prisms

Nature DX ED features fully multi-coated optics. A binocular can be considered "fully multi-coated" when all air-to-glass surfaces are coated with multiple layers of anti-reflectivity coatings so that the maximum amount of light passes through the glass to the eye.

The prisms inside Nature DX ED are made of high quality BaK-4 glass with phase coatings applied so that more light is reflected off their internal faces and passes through to the eye.

Construction

The Aluminum Dew Shield provides a perfect, custom fit for 6" Celestron telescope tubes. The exterior of the dew shield is a rigid, aluminum cylinder that will not fold, flex, or deform. Inside, a velvet-lined interior absorbs any additional stray light and excess moisture, creating optimal contrast when viewing and imaging. Attach the dew shield to your telescope tube with the two adjustable clips to ensure a snug fit.

We've also constructed the cover cap from durable yet lightweight aluminum. When your telescope is not in use, place the cover cap on your dew shield to protect your Schmidt corrector from stray dust particles. The cover cap also offers you the ability to quickly and easily acquire dark frames for imaging.
